Having a trusted (or bonded) resource to care for your system, manage security and other patches, handle upgrades and consult for application questions will go a long way to creating a happy user experience as you adopt an EMR. This is a critical role, as the information technology support team will require administrative privileges on your system, which has HIPAA implications. They need to be both trusted and competent.

Hospital IT personnel are now able to provide services to group practices under 'Safe Harbors' created by recent Stark Legislation. Whether you wish to have hospital IT personnel involved in supporting your system and having administrative rights on your computers, is another matter to consider carefully.
